Pick a painting
From easiest to hardest. The last four are real paintings from The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
How the score works
- The picture and your copy are both reduced to a grid of average colours, and compared square by square. So it rewards the right colours in the right places, not neat lines.
- Start with big areas. Get the sky, the ground and the big shapes down first, light where it is light and dark where it is dark. Fine outlines barely move the score.
- A blank page scores 0%, and a very good copy around 80%. Every painting is scaled the same way, so 70% on the Hokusai is as good as 70% on the balloon.
- You only get the painting's own colours, so there is nothing to mix.
About the paintings
The four masterpieces - three by Vincent van Gogh and Hokusai's Great Wave - come from the Open Access collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, released into the public domain (CC0). The simpler pictures were drawn for Bogil.
Race a friend on the same painting
In Bogil you both copy the same painting at the same time, each on your own phone, with a live score showing who is ahead. Five minutes on the clock, seven for the masterpieces.
